There is a long and active programme to extend the ergodic theorem in various directions. Most notably, by considering averages along subsequences and weighted averages, where the weights have some arithmetic structure. This leads to the study of discrete averaging operators. In the beginning of the talk, I will give a gentle introduction to this area. I will then focus on the case when the weight is given by the divisor function and give some recent results. Time permitting, I hope to also give some idea about how these results are
proved. This is joint work with Christina Giannitsi (Vanderbilt) and Hamed Mousavi (Bristol).
